Kochi: India is seeking extradition of fugitive Indian businessman, Mehul Choksi, 65, who was arrested by Belgium on April 12, media reports said.
The Belgian Justice Department on Monday confirmed to the NDTV India making a request for Choksi’s extradition.
The diamond merchant fled India and was at large for about seven years.
CBI is wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Directorate of
Enforcement (ED) for allegedly defrauding the Punjab National Bank (PNB) of Rs 13,850 crore. His nephew, Nirav Modi, was also allegedly involved in the fraud.
Choksi is accused of conniving with those including PNB officials from 2014 to 2017
for defrauding the bank.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the arrest of Choksi was an achievement of Indian diplomacy under the Modi government, the reports said.
