Kochi: The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, MP, is arming the BJP to fire new salvos at him with the latest being his meeting with a controversial Christian priest George Ponnaiah whose remarks have helped the saffron party to trigger a new controversy.
The video of Rahul meeting with George is going rival with BJP accusing the party leader of trying to create division. A number of BJP leaders including Shehzad Poonawala, Sambit Patra, have lambasted Rahul for meeting the priest who has a history of making controversial remarks. The priest had made controversial remarks against the Prime Minister, but later apologised and tendered an apology.
Earlier, it was Rahul’s expensive Tee shirt which was being used by the BJP to target him before stumbling upon the priest incident. While senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has flayed the BJP for creating baseless issues on the priest issue, the matter is going to be utilized by the BJP in the coming days to gain votes in the Gujarat assembly polls.
Also the priest issue is a failure on the part of the Congress leadership to foresee the likely controversy it would trigger, providing fodder for the BJP and others. Rahul Gandhi started the campaign to Kashmir from the southernmost tip of the country at Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu the other day.
