Kochi: Veeyapuram Chundan (snake boats) won the 71st edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race organised in Punnamada Lake on Saturday.
The winning boat was rowed by Village Boat Club, Kainakari and led by Baiju Kuttanad.
Veeyapuram Chundan touched the finishing line in 4.21.084 minutes. Nadubhagom Chundan of Punnamada Boat Club came second, Melppadam Chundan of Pallathuruthy Boat Club, third and Niranam Chundan of Niranam Boat Club finished fourth.
There 75 boats, including 21 chundan vallams (snakeboats), in the fray.
Besides the snakeboat race, competitions are held in the churulan, iruttu kuthi ‘A’, iruttu kuthi ‘B’, iruttu kuthi ‘C’, veppu ‘A’, veppu ‘B’, thekkanodi thara, and thekkanodi kettu categories.
