RS gives nod to Waqf bill

Kochi: After Lok Sabha giving its nod, the controversial Waqf bill sailed through the
Rajya Sabha after encountering strong debate on Friday, media reports said.
The 12- hour debate began on Thursday afternoon and went past midnight to get cleared with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it.
With the Parliament passing the bill, it needs to be cleared by the President to make it a law. The Rajya Sabha also cleared Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024 by a voice vote.
The Lok Sabha had cleared the bill after a long debate on Thursday.
The opposition termed it ‘unconstitutional’ and an ‘attack on religious freedom’.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved the motion in Rajya Sabha for consideration of the bill on Thursday afternoon.
The government introduced the revised Waqf (Amendment) bill 2025 in the session after incorporating the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) which examined the legislation introduced in August last year and gave its recommendations.
The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995 and improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India.
The bill aims to enhance the efficiency of Waqf board.
