Kochi: Noted Malayalam playback singer M G Sreekumar was fined Rs 25,000 for allegedly polluting Kochi backwaters, media reports said.
The video of an unidentified person discharging the waste from Sreekumar’s house was taken by a tourist and posted in the social media by tagging Kerala Minister for Local Self-Governments M B Rajesh.
The panchayat officials of Mulavukad panchayat in Ernakulam examined the video to ensure the veracity of the allegations before issuing a notice to the singer under the Panchayat Raj Act.
Sreekumar was taken to task by Mulavukad panchayat in Ernakulam for dumping waste into the backwaters.
Officials said though Sreekumar lived in Thiruvananthapuram, and someone else was seen discharging waste from Sreekumar’s house.
The panchayat officials confirmed that the singer paid the fine immediately after receiving the notice.
